SALUTE THE SUN: Moving, Breathing & Exploring 108 Sun Salutations

WHAT IS SURYA NAMASKAR (THE SUN SALUTATIONS)?

Surya Namaskar is a repetition of a series of postures often offered near the beginning of a practice. This sequence includes Tadasana, Uttanasna, Downward Facing Dog, Plank, Catarunga (or Lowering Down) and Upward Dog (or Bujagasana) and various Lunging. Through this sequence, we honor and salute the power of the sun to heat, energize and inspire and begin to realize that the same powers live within ourselves.

WHY 108 ROUNDS?

108 is considered a sacred number in yoga and other spiritual practices. In yoga, 108 refers to spiritual completion. It is why japa malas are composed of 108 beads and why pranayama practices are often completed in cycles of 108. There are 108 nadis, or energy channels in the body, that form the heart chakra and 108 marmas, or pressure points. Hindu deities have 108 names, in Jainism there are believed to be 108 virtues and many Buddhist temples have 108 steps representing 108 steps to enlightenment. Also the distance between the Earth and the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the sun. It is a number that has both an energetic and spiritual potency but also will act as a clarifier and ultimate goal as we move through our rounds together.

I AM CURIOUS BUT THIS SOUNDS INTENSE?!

The continuity of movement will be intense! But it is through this sadhana, consistency of practice, that you will unlock, uncover and reveal through both repetition and commitment. And don’t worry there will be moments to rest and recover as well. As always, this practice is one of exploration.

PLEASE NOTE:

A familiarity with yoga and the movement of the sun salutations is recommended for this workshop.
